On May 1, 2008, Ohio enacted a landmark new energy policy designed to attract quality jobs of the future, ensure affordable and stable energy prices, and safeguard Ohio families by empowering consumers and modernizing Ohio’s energy infrastructure.
The energy law establishes annual benchmarks for renewable energy and energy efficiency expanding dramatically the market for these emerging industries. As a result, Ohio utilities are expected to implement energy efficiency programs to achieve a cumulative, annual energy savings in excess of 22 percent by 2025. Renewable energy sources, including wind, are anticipated to supply power for at least 12.5 percent of electricity needs by 2025. This renewable energy standard in Ohio is the third most aggressive policy in the U.S. and, if met fully by wind power development, would translate into at least 6,000 (MW) of new wind power capacity – enough to power 1.8 million Ohio homes.
